in cairo? >> good afternoon, tamron. well egyptian officials have met with the leaders of the two major palestinian factions engaged in this military operation with israel. they're trying to get them to commit to a cessation of hostility force a period of 48 hours to allow for a longer truce to go into effect. the palestinians feel they have the upper hand here, and they are saying they will not stop their attacks into southern israel so long as israel maintains a siege on gaza. they want it lifted and they want guaranteed backed by the international community that israel will no longer engage and target and kill senior leaders of the palestinian factions here in gaza. they want all of these demands guaranteed by the international community. for its part israel wants to approach it from a different angle. they want a complete cessation of hostilities for 38 hours for so followed by a -- other concerns they have. the challenge for egypt is to try and close that gap as quickly as possible because essentially everyone here feels that they're running out of time. you have the israelis amass

the mobilization of 75,000 army reservists. joining us now is nbc live from gaza. as peace talks continue in cairo, israel is demanding that hamas stop firing rockets across the border. is there a willingness to do this or has the number of civilian casualties made a cease-fire now much less likely? >> well, you know, the fact that the negotiations are ongoing is an indication that palestinian factions can abide by the truce. in fact, in the past it's been on multiple occasions documented that palestinian factions have been committed to the truce until there's been some kind of violation, if you will, from the israeli side that israel justifies as an act in its own security. nonetheless, palestinian factions say they have abided by it in the past, they would abide by it again in the future if there is one in place. the question is can they get to that agreement in the next couple hours before time runs out. and the question really surrounding the truce have to deal with the cessation of hostilities. israel wants an immediate cessation of hostilities. then enter into negotiations about lifting a fi

with egyptian negotiators in cairo. hamas is saying that israel can stop the fighting simply by agreeing to hamas' demands. they're claiming israel is begging for a truce. a claim that israel vehemently denies. in other lighter news this morning, let's turn back to u.s. political news where representative alan west is still buried in denial. he won his bid for a recount of early ballots in st. lucie county but he is still losing when it comes to keeping his congressional seat in florida's district 18. in fact, democratic patrick murphy picked up some 300 more votes over the weekend bringing his total to about 2,000. west is still refusing to concede the election saying that he plans to review the result and additional data in order to decide how to move forward. murphy has claimed victory and it is very clear that west is probably all done. we're back with more steph after the break. these talking points, that the right have, about the "heavy hand of government" ... i want to have that conversation. let's talk about it. really? yo
